    NORTHERN IRELAND L'Irlande du Nord désigne la partie de l'Irlande à majorité protestante restée rattachée à la Grande-Bretagne lors de la partition du pays, en 1921. Les émeutes sanglantes qui ont éclaté à Belfast et à Londonderry en 1969 à la suite de manifestations revendiquant l'égalité des droits pour la minorité catholique ont marqué le début de trente ans de conflit entre catholiques et protestants en Irlande du Nord. Ce conflit vit s'affronter les nationalistes de l'IRA, favorables à un rattachement avec la République d'Irlande, différents groupes paramilitaires protestants anti-catholiques, et l'armée et la police, sous contrôle britannique. Le processus de paix, amorcé en 1994 et qui aboutit au Good Friday Agreement (voir encadré à l'entrée "good") de 1998, marqua une nouvelle étape plus optimiste dans l'histoire de l'Irlande du Nord.
